ASB Report August & September 2020 Junior Class Vice President Emma Phelps
Position Assessment: The first month of online school my position has been busy. We designed class t-shirts over the summer and sold around 57 class shirts. Naomi Wilbur and I got the opportunity to hand out, as well as sell more t-shirts in front of the school on September 17th. We had a good outcome, only having about 5 t-shirts that did not get picked up. Our ASB class is also planning a Fall Fest for the last week of October. My class officers and I have decided on our class theme to be “Fall Harvest”. We have started to discuss door decorations that will occur at my house, as well as planning to use my grandparents tractor as our “truck” for the trunk or treat. I am very excited for Fall Fest because I have lots of ideas when it comes to decorations. As far as it comes to the class Instagram, the class officers and I have helped Kyala Panky with the weekly posts, Sunday shoutouts, and reminders for class shirts. We have received an abundance amount of support as well as positive comments on our class instagram, mainly the Sunday Shoutouts. The Sunday Shoutouts include an inclusive amount of classmates that are arranged to have a large variety of hobbies and personality traits to make sure we are including everybody in our class.
Professional Development: This year I have focused more on my professional development skills rather than putting on events, considering the circumstances we are all facing this year. Thus far I have been making sure to communicate effectively throughout the zoom calls and group chats. Communication is extremely important, especially this year, because we can not see each other face to face. I have been communicating with the class group chat about ideas for Fall Fest, what assignments we have throughout the week, and especially keeping everyone accountable. The ASB class is also doing a new book study called, “Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff”. This book study helps us take a break from planning events, and helps us focus more on ourselves, how to live an effective life, and how to let things go, hits “don't sweat the small stuff.”
Concerns/ Changes: Having every class through zoom brings lots of concerns or changes because it is all new to everyone, and a big change that nobody is used to. A concern that I have for the ASB class is communication. Communication is key especially if we are only seeing each other 2-3 times a week through zoom. I find our communication sliding through when it comes to class discussions and keeping eachother up to date when it comes to new projects. A way to change this is more communication through group chats, and speaking up in class when needed.
Positive Comment: I am very proud of the freshmen this year. We have been in school for about a month now, and the freshmen are not afraid to speak up in class. When it comes to planning events, sharing the journal, or talking about book study, they will always volunteer to talk or try to add their own input to the conversation. They seem like they communicate very well with each other, always have their work done, and overall proud of them for speaking up in their first year of ASB because I know that can be nerve wracking.
My Impact: For my impact the new journals have inspired me to try to make a change or an impact at least once a week. I have focused more on simple things such as typing sweet messages to teachers on the homework I turn in, or in the private comments on google classroom. Those acts of kindness take up to one minute that can brighten a teachers day. The past week I have also paid for the car behind me in line at Starbucks, as well as bringing my hairdresser a coffee before my appointment. Doing a small act of kindness can create an impact just by putting a smile on other peoples faces.
ASB Report October & November 2020 Junior Class Vice President Emma Phelps
Position Assessment: In October the Junior officers started the Fall Fest project. This project acted as if we had a winter fest, except virtually and all at home. The activities that went on were the door decorating, pumpkin carving, weekly dress up days, fall fest candidates, and the halloween drive thru with class floats. Avery was in charge of ordering all of the decorations, such as crates and a doormat. Kayla was in charge of social media, and kept our class updated. Naomi was in charge of keeping everything organized. And I was in charge of getting all items together such as the tractor, my front door, and having everyone over for pumpkin carving. Overall Fall Fest went good, and the juniors took 2nd place. After Fall Fest the leadership class chose the Dude Be Nice candidate. Once we chose Mr. Perez I got to film a video for him, and wrote him a letter. Finally, ASB, yearbook, United, peer assistance, and journalism all presented the award to Perez, social distancing on Tuesday morning.
Professional Development: The last couple weeks of November the class all got to choose their future job choice for their job interview. I chose a large animal vet to be my future job. After choosing our career we started our professional page on our weebly. We added an introduction letter, as well as another link for the same letter.
Concerns/ Changes: With the advancements of students going back to school, I believe the main concern is following the safety protocols that the school has set, as well as adjuding to sitting in class in person. Sitting at home for an hour each class period with a thirty minute break between, to coming to school for 90 minutes each period is a big adjustment that everyone has to prepare for. I am most nervous for my grades dropping as this quarter ends, and not only my grades, my health. Coming home right before Christmas is a concern because there is a chance I could spread it to my close family, such as grandparents and cousins.
Positive Comment: I feel like the Dude be Nice ceremony went very well, and better than expected. As far as I could see, everyone was socially distant and all had masks on. Mr. Perez’s gifts were all representative of him, and caught him by surprise. After the ceremony I saw all but nice things through social media congratulating Perez, as well as seeing him in class the same day. While I saw him on zoom he said that he was very surprised, and “have never received an award from the high school before.”
My Impact: The past year I have had a student shadow me while on campus, to potentially come to Ripon High. Once school had closed in March she had made the decision to come to Ripon High for 2020-2021. The past couple months I have kept in touch with her once a week asking how her classes are, giving her information about Fall Fest, as well as meeting with her on the first day back to school in person to ask if she knew where classes were and to make sure she felt comfortable at school. I plan to go to lunch with her this next week to catch up and talk about our first week back. I feel like that is my impact because I have taken time out of my days to make sure new students at Ripon High feel comfortable and welcomed.
ASB Report February & March 2021 Junior Class Vice President Emma Phelps
Position Assessment: In February everyone in class was assigned a coloring ABC packet, and clovers to fill out for March 17th for every student. The Junior officers also started brainstorming ideas before homecoming. This brainstorming consisted of talking about themes, items we already have, and issues to bring up in homecoming discussions to help advance this activity. In March we had facetime meetings , in which Avery recorded, and we successfully picked a theme and ordered all of our supplies ahead of time. We plan to work on homecoming at my house once we get our supplies. Brett is building us a stage, Kayla is working on creating the music, Naomi is cordiographing, and I am in charge of setting up the fashion show. On March 17th the class officers hung up all of the clovers on Pendletons window, in which Kayla was in charge of asking for permission on the window. I have also worked with the class Vps to put the new dates on all of the Love Ripon Highs for Love Ripon.
Professional Development: In March I have focused on Love Ripon, homecoming, and mock interviews. I was able to find a professional for my interview, as well as finishing my resume in February. Being busy has helped me stay on task, and stay organized. I have followed up with my mock interview by doing research and watching ted talks about my profession.
Concerns/ Changes: With the advancements of students going back to school, and events starting back up, I believe the main concern is following the safety protocols that the school has set while still putting on successful events. Homecoming, Every 15 min, senior night, and many more events will have to be adjusted. This means, not only id leadership, but the student body are trying something new this year. The involvement might be lower because it is through technology, and we aren't able to rally everyone together. Also concerts about an ASB student being on quarantine while homecoming. During homecoming we need all hands on deck.
Positive Comment: The senior sports wall and clovers have run very smoothly and were easy adjustments. Anthony was in charge of seniors that play sports. He acknowledged them by handing out flowers, creating a post on Instagram, and putting out flyers on the week of the 15th. We have received a lot of positive feedback from seniors. The clovers also went well. The ASB class put them up before school started, and students are grabbing them off the window when they walk by. My Impact: I have focused more on the little things, and doing what makes me happy, such as raising cows, cleaning, and taking pictures. Taking time for myself has made a difference in my mental health. I have also paid attention to showing kindness towards teachers and adults especially when they seem stressed. Whether that be complementing their outfit, talking to them more than usual, or being a generally nice student.
